All the cell phones manufacturers in India will now legally require to include a 'Panic button' as a safety feature starting from early 2017 as per the announcement made by Ministry of Communication and Technology.
Violence against women is a serious issue in India, about 4 rapes occur every hour in India. To protect women against violence it has been made mandatory to include a 'Panic Button' on every cell phones that will be sold in India.
By pressing and holding this dedicated key one can quickly call emergency services for safety measures.
Not only 'Panic Button' but all the cell phone sold in India since 2018 on-wards should now feature GPS based services to track victim immediately. It will be difficult to implement this in feature phones but it is not an issue for smartphones.
The Panic feature can be activated on smartphones by quickly pressing power button three times and other phones by pressing and holding '9' or '5' keys on number pad.
Major smartphone manufacturers such as Samsung and Apple are supporting for this plan and have already started to work towards it.
This is not a solution to women assault in India but it will at least provide some extra protection to women and some sense of fear to attackers.
