Amazon Kindle Oasis: Worth $290?

Amazon comes up with a better version of its e-reader, the Kindle series that's smaller, lighter and faster. The new Kindle Oasis breaks with the mould of the basic e-reading experience to become a luxury item in a class of its own. But it is more expensive!

It takes technology from the others, refined and placed into a thinner, lighter and rethought design. But $290? That seems a bit high for an e- reader, right? Let's take a deeper look and see if it's really worth it.

With it's design, It's been completely redesigned: the device is more square in shape than previous Kindles, weighs a mere 131 grams (4.6 ounces) and measures 3.4 mm (0.13 inches) at its slimmest point. The new shape makes the screen look smaller than on other Kindles. But no, it's just an optical illusion. The screen is the same 6 inches but with a thinner bezel around it.

With the weight, it seems a lot lighter than the previous versions. Amazon's engineers equipped the new e-reader with a "featherweight" polymer frame plated with metal structural electroplating that adds rigidity. The asymmetric design means that the majority of the weight of the Kindle - all 131g of it – is distributed closer to your hand making it easier to grip and hold steady.

Specifications

  • Screen: 6in Paperwhite with frontlight (300ppi)
  • Storage: 4GB
  • Dimensions: 143 x 122 x 8.5mm (3.4mm at thinnest point)
  • Weight : 131g (133g 3G version)
  • Rated battery life: 28 hours (30 minutes a day for 8 weeks, Wi-Fi off, brightness level 10)

Battery Life stayed to be pretty good. With one charge it would give around 1 whole book of reading, or 6 hours of it. With the battery case provided, it stayed up much more.

Overall, it may be said that the Oasis is the best e- reader so far. It has this luxurious feel which is not found in many of the readers out in the market. But the Voyage is pretty similar with a lower price, just that it doesn't have the same body and luxury. So, the Oasis is not for everyone, but still the best out there in the market.
